Big pattern problems - beautiful blanket

I’ve made this blanket twice now. It turns out beautiful. As said in other reviews, this pattern has errors and needs to be revised.
- Tips I wish someone had told me -
Create a loose starting chain
Row 1: note that the cross instructions are in italics and do not include the instructions in the line above
Row 2: the mini stitch made from the popcorn stitch in the previous row should be included in your stitch count
Row 2 of the lattice panel: the first set of dc made in skipped stitches should be kept in front of your other stitches without wrapping your yarn around the work behind them
Row 3 and Row 5: whenever the pattern says to FPtr or FPdc around stitches two rows below, FPdtr instead. This stitch is listed in the stitch guide and never used. It is necessary to keep your blanket from curling over. Also whenever a cross is made in these rows, it needs to be connected to the cross two rows below using FPdtr in the first and third stitches. This is also omitted and necessary. It changes the look from rows of flat little “x”s to the long double helix lines in the photo

Love Love this Pattern & Yarn, But . . .

Since March of 2019, I’ve crocheted Mary Maxim’s Crocheted Cables Baby Blanket (#97653N) twenty-two times! My review covers the yarn and the pattern.

The Yarn: I’ve crocheted this pattern twelve times with Mary Maxim’s Baby’s Best Yarn and ten times with other yarn brands. MM’s Baby Best Yarn is soft and creates a nice stitch definition for this pattern. Cocoa and Sandbox were gorgeous soft brown colorways that have been discontinued, unfortunately. Generally, greys and browns are favorite colors (and other muted colors) with new parents – pastels and brights are not. Once in a while, the skeins might produce a tangled wad. I’ve taken to setting time aside at the beginning to rewind all skeins into cakes using my ball winder. The lack of soft brown colorway options subtracts a star from this review.

The Pattern: I’ve made a few adjustments and design revisions to the pattern – including retyping it so that the directions flow nicely as I crochet. Furthermore, I created my own crochet diagrams using The Craft Yarn Council’s Crochet Chart Symbols. Diagrams are a valuable addition to the narrative pattern – it would be great if Mary Maxim included them with their designs. The first blanket I made required pulling out the first few rows four times before I figured out the pattern. Now, once I have the first five rows of this blanket completed correctly, the blanket moves along well – creating beautiful crochet textures. The blankets I’ve made have been highly complimented and enjoyed. It is one of my most favorite patterns. The initial difficulty with this pattern could be addressed easily with clarifying the directions and adding diagrams – hence the review is minus another star.

Beautiful result!

This pattern is definitely for the experienced stitcher but the end result is stunning! I made this for our first grandchild and chose the off white as the baby’s gender will be a surprise!

Love the quality of wool

Love the quality of wool but pattern is impossible. Have followed and ripped out 5 times there is not enough stitches to complete the 2nd row shot about 5 chains so changing patterns

Pattern is impossible to follow

Yarn is fine but it's damn near impossible to understand what the pattern is saying. It needs pictures to accompany it, but the only pictures are for basic information that I already know. I've been crocheting for over a decade and I've done cabled blankets before, but the lattice panel is impossible and I can't find any guides. If there was a guide I would change my rating but as is, I can't recommend this.

Hi Liz, thank you for your feedback on the Crocheted Cables Blanket. We have an excellent project assistance team that would love to assist you. Please contact customer service at 1 800 962 9504 to set up project assistance.

Love this blanket, so pretty

Love this blanket, so pretty and delicate, however I did have to purchase extra yarn as I did not have enough to do the border
My tension/sizing was as the pattern indicated

Hard to follow

This pattern is extremely hard to follow. I bought this kit to make a blanket for my son. I ended up having to make a different one. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get the pattern to turn out. I even took it to my mother in law who has been crocheting for a looooong time and who always helps me when I need it, and she couldn't figure it out either.

Lovely pattern

Lovely pattern and soft yarn - making baby blankets for charity and wanted something with a little more variety of stitches.

The yarn is beautiful...just a little sparkle to it. The pattern is a little tricky at first but once you figure it out smooth sailing to the end. A wonderful gift for a new baby.

crochet cables blanket

I've been crocheting for years. This pattern was a little confusing and took me about 3 tries to get it going. I ended up not liking the way it looked and stopped the project. I am currently using the yarn (which is really nice) on another blanket (another previous Mary Maxim blanket pattern).

Beautiful Blanket

Once the pattern is established, it is a breeze. I had to follow the lattice pattern every row, but it was worth the little bit of extra trouble. Ordered more yarn "just in case" and I had plenty and now have enough to make another blanket.
