Description
Create a cherished Christmas stocking for a loved one using this pattern. Originally made with Mary Maxim Starlette, which offered 180 yds per 3.5 oz skein at the time. Shop our store for your favorite worsted-weight yarns, including Starlette. Please note that yardages will vary. Materials List: One skein each of Red, White, Green, and Burgundy. Also requires a U.S. size 8 (5 mm) knitting needle. Finished measures about 20". Intermediate knit.
Stitch Requirements: Cast on, cast off, knit, purl, increase, decrease, color changes.

So glad these older patterns are still available from Mary maxim. This project was done for another person who wanted it to coordinate with stockings already in the family. They were pleased with the final project.
I was not thrilled with the way this pattern was constructed. It was odd to me to “split” the heel and the stitch it together. I also thought it was odd to do the foot and toe in the round. HOWEVER, I realized the construction was a blessing (and an ingenious design) when I compared it to the stockings I was matching. I followed the pattern, but the stockings had white feet and red toes. I had to rip the foot out of this stocking and re-knit it to match the others. The construction that I had been complaining about made the deconstruction easy. The stocking now perfectly matches the rest of the family’s stockings.
As only an occasional knitter I found the instructions hard to follow in places but the end product turned out nicely.

I have knit many family members Mary Maxim Christmas stockings over the years. They are always well received. This pattern did not disappoint. I did decide to do duplicate stitch for some of the dark stitches, but followed the pattern easily otherwise.
Candy cane pattern was easy to use. My grandson loved the design and his name on it!

These are the patterns my mom used 40 years ago to knit Christmas stocking for all of her grandchildren.
I have my first grandbaby and am following tradition. the body of the stocking directions were easy to follow.
I'd have an easier time if I knew how to turn the heel.
