Bamboo dpns by Clover Takumi, a sustainable choice Review by Carol

These are actually my favorite wooden DPNs. They are smooth, there are 5 in the set. They are made out of bamboo, a sustainable wood. (Bamboo trees, actually a very enormous member of the grass family, grow very rapidly.) I like the way they handle the yarn. Metal DPNs have a tendency to be too slippery and the yarn can slip off inadvertently so I do prefer any type of wood DPNs to any metal DPNs. The yarn stays on wooden needles better than metal. I usually do not need to use tip protectors on wooden needles to keep the yarn on the needles during the middle of a project. For care of my wooden needles, I rub them with a piece of wax paper to take care of the surfaces.
Cons:
I have two objections to these needles. 1. They are more expensive than other DPNs for a set of one size.
2. After several years, the bamboo woods seems to dry out; I can feel minute sunken in spots between the grain of the wood. Does not effect the ability to knit with them but still, I think it indicts that will not last a lifetime. Bamboo may be sustainable but I have noticed that wood from fast growing trees (softer woods) does not maintain its quality the way that wood from really slow growing trees does (the hard woods).

But they are still my favorites.

Disclaimer: Have not tried the KnitPicks DPNs yet. Mainly because they are pricey; you have to buy them in a set of several sizes.
